I am glad you are at least considering your options before jumping into back surgery. Sometimes the pain is so severe that it affects an individual’s activities of daily living so they opt for surgery in hopes of getting it “fixed.” There are alternatives to surgery, but oftentimes these provide temporary or often disappointing results. After 30 years of treating bad backs, non-surgical spinal decompression has become my favorite treatment for chronic back pain caused by bulging or degenerative discs and back pain that has lasted more than six months. Decompression treatment is a painless procedure that gently “pumps” the affected disc, reducing external pressure, allowing nutrients, oxygen and fluids to be drawn into the disc. Disc height is increased, taking the irritation off delicate nerves and restoring normal joint motion. We are seeing long-term results with this treatment, with a series of treatment over a four or five week period usually required for best results. If you suffer from chronic back, hip or leg pain, decompression treatment should definitely be considered as a safe, effective alternative to surgery.
